WingChun de-emphasizes movements that rely on athleticism and flexibility to enable practicioners to train throughout their whole lives without long-term or serious injury. There are many other aspects of WingChun that are not on the website. The only way to truly know what WingChun is about is to experience it for yourself. We invite you to schedule a trial lesson in order to feel WingChun.

Techniques

WingChun uses attacks which minimize openings for counter attacks. Long attacks and swinging attacks are not used. WingChun is commonly known for the straight vertical punch because is it is stronger and more effective at close range than the traditional martial arts punch. WingChun also uses other punching techniques that look similar to hooks and uppercuts. The primary kicking weapons are the front kick, side kick, and slant kick. They are applied to the legs, groin, and lower torso. High kicks are rarely used in Wing Chun because they are viewed as too risky. Other strikes include elbows, knees, palms, fingers, and shoulders.

WingChun's defensive techniques are unique. Many are used to damage the attacking limb. Other techniques are used to divert an opponent's force when the limbs make contact. The defensive techniques can be used as a barrier while stance turns and side retreating steps are used to evade an attack. There is often no need to jump backward from an attack.
